dct:title "NHMO Mammal collection" ;
dct:description """<para>The NHMO Mammal collection at the Natural History Museum in Oslo, Norway comprises around 680 species, of which about 100 have been collected in Norway. Although the collections holds several thousand objects from the last half of the 19th and first decades of the 20th century, most objects are from the 1970s and around the turn of the millennium.
Objects in the collection are preserved as mounted specimens, hides, skeletons or in ethanol (mainly rodents). During the later decades, a new sub-collection has been built up, consisting of mammalian tissue and extracted DNA samples. This is also part of the NHMO DNA Bank. The samples have partly been taken from existing objects in the Mammal collection, partly from newly arrived mammals, e.g. road kills and other salvage.
The collection contains considerable sub-collections of polar bear skulls, mainly from the Norwegian parts of the species’ distribution range, Scandinavian wolves, and European otters and rodents from Norway.
The collection is databased in Corema, a software that has been developed in close cooperation between the NHMO and the developer, Compositae AS (https://www.coremadb.com/). An accession generally refers to a given individual at a specific place and time; for each accession, one or more items may exist. Examples of item types include preserved skins, mounted specimens, osteological specimens, horns or antlers, blood, tissue and extracted DNA.</para><para>Objects in the collection are generally available for scientific use, subject to an individual evaluation of the intended use.
Samples in the NHMO DNA Bank are also available for loans to the general scientific community, on the conditions set out in the Grant policy (see DNA Bank web page http://www.nhm.uio.no/english/research/infrastructure/dna-bank/). However, juridical or other limitations may apply to samples, which will have to be clarified before such samples can be loaned.</para>""" ;

Several of NHMO’s historical collections from the Dannevig expeditions (1950’s), the Fram 2 expedition (early 1898-1902), and the Norwegian North-Atlantic Expedition (1876-1878), first worked on, among others, by the marine biologist Immanuel Vigeland, nephew of the more famous Gustav Vigeland, and the well-known Ole Nordgaard, are available here. Naturally, material from the Oslofjord, starting from the 1910’s, notably collected by Martit and Bengt Christiansen (Drøbakinnsamlingene, 1950’s) are also included. In addition, voucher specimens from global sequencing efforts, (early 2020's) funded by the European Research Council (ERC), spearheaded by researchers from the NHMO (Evolution and Paleobiology, EPA) from more recent collecting efforts are also represented here.</para><para>Currently this digital collection is biased towards marine Bryozoa (90%), reflecting not just the known extant diversity of lophophorates (there are 6000+ described  species of living bryozoan but only 400+ species of living brachiopods), but also the research interest of NHMO, in part supported by Artsdatabanken (project NorDigBryo, 2023-2025). There are also freshwater Bryozoa from across Norway collected by Jan Økland. dct:description """
            The NHMO Fish  Collection of the Natural History Museum contains around 10,000 objects, including 27 holotypes, 11 paratypes and 82 other types. The collection was largely built through expeditions in the first half of the 20th century, of which many targeted the Arctic region (see Johannessen et al. 2023). In addition to these early expeditions, objects were obtained around the globe, including Madagascar, South America, and Antarctica. The collection also includes specimens returned from French Polynesia and Easter Island by Thor Heyerdahl (see Delrieu-Trottin et al. 2025). Most specimens were fixated in formalin upon collection.

dct:title "NHMO Invertebrate collection" ;
dct:description "<para>The invertebrate collection is a collection that was established in 2023 by reorganizing the invertebrate collections at NHMO. It includes parts of the former helminth and crustacean collections. The collection includes all invertebrate groups except Panarthropoda, Mollusca, Bryozoa, Brachiopoda, and Phoronida. In total, the collection is responsible for 25 major invertebrate taxa (23 are known as phyla and two as subphyla). Originating from the museum's research history, the collection has several different main focuses. One taxon of research interest is polychaete worms (Annelida). Another group is three major parasitic groups. Haptor worms (Monogenea, Gyrodactylus) and flukes (Digenea, Phyllodistomum) infecting fishes are two groups and roundworms (Nematoda, Elaphostrongylus) infecting deer (Cervidae) is another. Cnidarians and echinoderms also form large groups in the collection. In addition, many researchers over the years have collected other material from both freshwater and marine areas in Norway and several other countries. There is also material from several expeditions from the 19th and 20th centuries. The oldest material dates to the collecting activities of Michael Sars.</para><para>The collection comprises approximately 15,000 catalogued objects. In addition, there are uncatalogued objects (approximately 8,000 specimens) and also unsorted material from various expeditions and projects. The majority of this is alcohol-preserved material (wet collections). Additionally, approx. 800 catalogued microscopy slides (there are also several thousand uncatalogued slides as reference material from project work) are part of the collection. Over 265 species are first descriptions (type material) with 410 specimens.</para><para>All accessioned specimens have been digitized and are partly available on GBIF. The rest will soon be made available. The collection is used by the museum's researchers and students, and by researchers from Norway and abroad who either borrow material or visit the museum as guest researchers. The is a source for local, national and international research. In addition, objects in the collection are made available for DNA-based research such as genome sequencing. This will be particularly important in view of the new large, global genome projects and the fact that many species will only be possible to sequence from museum material. The latter is particularly demanding for material from wet collections.</para>" ;
